Aaron Michka is an Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the Department of Anthropology within the College of Arts and Letters. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (2021), an MSc from the University of Oxford (2012), an M.Div. from Notre Dame (2008), and a B.A. from Notre Dame (2004). As a Catholic priest and member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, he integrates anthropology and theology in his research and teaching.
His research focuses on Coptic Christian communities in Egypt, Orthodox Christianity, and the anthropology of religious pluralism. His current book project explores religious pluralism in a Christian-majority town in Upper Egypt, drawing on 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork. This project examines how Christians shape their landscape in a context of relative freedom from Muslim oversight, challenging minoritizing narratives.
Dr. Michka’s work has been published in the Journal of the Canadian Society for Coptic Studies, and he previously served as a residential fellow at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study (2020-21). He is also involved in pastoral care as a priest-in-residence in Siegfried Hall.
