Aaron Burgess is an Assistant Professor of Music Education in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at Ithaca College. He teaches instrumental music education courses, supervises student teachers, and conducts ensembles including the Ithaca College Symphonic Band and Trombone Troupe. Additionally, he serves as music director of the Ithaca Community Orchestra and resident conductor of the Ithaca New Music Collective.
His educational background includes:
- Master of Music in Wind Conducting from Ithaca College (2018)
- Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Connecticut (2007)
Professor Burgess specializes in conducting techniques, wind band pedagogy, and brass instruction. His professional work emphasizes non-verbal communication in ensemble leadership and music-forward rehearsal planning, as demonstrated in presentations like "Teaching Through Gesture" and "Satisfying and Effective Rehearsal Planning." He has commissioned new works for winds and percussion while collaborating with artists including Vienna Philharmonic trombonist Peter Steiner and composers Dana Wilson and Eric Ewazen.
As supervisor of junior and senior student teachers, he mentors future music educators through Ithaca College's teacher preparation program. His conducting roles provide practical training for students in the Trombone Troupe and Symphonic Band, with recent performances documented in multiple video recordings from 2021-2023.
Professor Burgess actively leads the Ithaca College Trombone Troupe, Symphonic Band, Ithaca Community Orchestra, and Ithaca New Music Collective. His upcoming engagements include the Orange County and Oswego All-County Honor Bands in 2025-2026, reflecting his ongoing commitment to community music education.
