Antonio Aguilera Guirao is an Associate Professor at the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Santiago de Compostela. He is affiliated with the Instituto de Investigación del Medio Acuático para una Salud Global (iARCUS) and the Agrupación Estratégica BioReDes. His research focuses on viral diagnostics, hepatitis viruses (HBV, HCV, HDV), HIV/AIDS, and HTLV-1. He earned his PhD in 1990 with a thesis on HIV-1 prognosis markers. His work emphasizes molecular epidemiology, public health interventions, and optimizing diagnostic strategies for viral infections. Key projects include SARS-CoV-2 wastewater surveillance, hepatitis delta detection, and expanding HTLV screening in Europe.
Education: PhD in Microbiology (1990, USC) with a thesis on HIV-1 immunoblot assays. Extensive postdoctoral expertise in virology and clinical microbiology.
Research interests span viral hepatitis management, antiretroviral resistance, and molecular diagnostics. His recent studies address hepatitis C one-step diagnosis, SARS-CoV-2 variant tracking, and optimizing HTLV-1 screening in high-risk populations. He collaborates on national and international guidelines for viral hepatitis elimination.
Advising: No advisees listed. Grants: Active in hepatitis and HIV research funding initiatives. Labs: iARCUS and BioReDes focus on aquatic health and sustainable bioresource management, respectively.
