Dr. Joey Bargsten is a Professor in the Communication and Multimedia Studies department within the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University. He holds a PhD from the University of Iowa and teaches courses including Fundamentals of Multimedia, Interactive Multimedia, Multimedia Practicum, Creating Interactive Culture, New Media Studies, and Creating Interactive Soundtracks. Bargsten's research focuses on the intersection of digital media and live performance, with particular expertise in interactive multimedia, music and sound design for virtual reality environments, and intermedia performance. His work explores how digital technologies can transform traditional artistic forms, creating what he terms 'syncretic moments' where disparate materials and intentions unite meaningfully. His notable projects include the multimedia opera MelanchoLalaland™, which premiered at the Miami Beach Cinematheque in 2015 with support from the Knight Foundation, and BAD MIND TIME™, an award-winning interactive art website that was featured as one of 'The 9 Best New Media Projects on the Planet' by New Media Magazine in 1998. 2013 Miami Knight Art Challenge Awards for MelanchoLalaland™ InVision award by New Media Magazine (1998) Audience Award at the Stuttgart Filmwinter Festival Recognition from Broadcast Design Association, Fluxus International Film Festival, and Print Magazine Bargsten founded and directs FAU's MTEn (Media, Technology, and Entertainment) Experimental Media Ensemble (meme™), which explores the intersection between digital media and live performance. His recent work includes VR environments created with students in the Glitch Gallery™ project, where students produced virtual reality experiences ranging from miniature golf to creepy hospital environments. He has received significant grant support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs.
