Sergio Ospina-Romero is an Assistant Professor of Music (Musicology) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from Cornell University (2019), an M.A. in History from Universidad Nacional de Colombia (2013), and a B.A. in Anthropology from Universidad Nacional de Colombia (2004). His interdisciplinary background as a musician, anthropologist, cultural historian, and musicologist informs his unique scholarly perspective. His work examines how recording technologies shaped musical practices and cultural identities across Latin America and the Caribbean. He approaches musicology through multiple disciplinary lenses, exploring the intersections of technology, imperialism, cultural exchange, and musical expression. His research reveals how early recording expeditions were intertwined with commercial expansion and political intervention, while also documenting local adaptations and appropriations of these technologies. His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the historical impact of recording technologies, particularly examining the Victor Talking Machine Company's expeditions throughout Latin America. His scholarly work spans multiple languages and appears in prestigious journals across the Americas, reflecting his transnational approach to music history. Ospina-Romero's research bridges historical musicology with sound studies, cultural history, and postcolonial theory to provide nuanced understandings of how music technologies have shaped cultural landscapes.
