Assistant Professor
Jikai Zhao is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at Kansas State University, part of the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering. His research focuses on converting agricultural, food, and plastic waste into biofuels, chemicals, and biomaterials using biological and catalytic technologies. His educational background includes: Ph.D. in Biological and Agricultural Engineering from Kansas State University (2022) M.S. in Food Science and Engineering from Henan University of Technology (2017) B.S. in Food Science and Engineering from Henan University of Technology (2014) Dr. Zhao's research spans biomanufacturing, synthetic biology, bioprocessing, fermentation, catalysis, techno-economic analysis, and life cycle assessment. His group engineers microbial consortia for producing bioplastic precursors and assesses the economic and environmental impacts of biorefinery processes. He also emphasizes STEM education through experiential learning and research opportunities. His scientific contributions have been recognized with several awards: Biological and Agricultural Engineering Graduate Student of the Year Graduate Student of the Month Robert I-Jen and Sophia Shui-Kan Jung Graduate Scholarship from the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering at K-State Dr. Zhao has secured over $10 million in research funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and National Science Foundation as PI or co-PI. He actively mentors undergraduate and graduate students, providing hands-on research experiences and professional development workshops. His research group is engaged in advancing sustainable biomanufacturing technologies.
