About
Professor Yan Jin is a leading academic in Smart Manufacturing and Robotics at Queen’s University Belfast’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. A Fellow of IMechE and Chartered Engineer, he has held roles from Research Fellow (2007-08) through Lecturer (2009-15), Senior Lecturer (2015-18), Reader (2018-21), and now as Professor. His research spans parallel kinematic machines, robotics, digital lean/green manufacturing, high-performance machining, and production management.
- BEng & MEng in Mechanical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology (1998, 2002)
- PhD in Robotics, Nanyang Technological University (2007)
His work focuses on integrating robotics with advanced manufacturing, particularly in surgical robotics, composite material machining, and sustainable production systems. Current projects include EPSRC-funded Q-PreMan and Cathedral Eye Clinic’s surgical robot development.
Recent publications highlight advancements in CFRP drilling prediction using BLS-VSG, thermal damage management in composites, and energy-saving gear hobbing machines. These align with his expertise in parallel mechanisms, machining, and sustainable design.
- 1st prize, IEEE UK & Ireland RAS Conference (2025)
- A. T. Yang Memorial Award in Theoretical Kinematics (2019)
- Best Paper Awards (2023)
Jin has secured funding from EPSRC, Royal Academy of Engineering, EU H2020, and industry leaders like Airbus and Bombardier. He chairs robotics committees in UK IFToMM and IMechE MICG, and has organized over 20 international conferences including ICMR2019.
