Will Atkin is an Associate Lecturer at the Courtauld Institute of Art, specializing in Late Antique, Medieval, and Byzantine art. He teaches courses spanning nineteenth and twentieth-century topics including Romantic art, early photography, Symbolist art, and avant-gardism. His doctoral research examined Christ's naming inscriptions in Byzantine art through interdisciplinary methodologies.
Research interests focus on the Surrealist Movement, with investigations into occult practices, cross-cultural symbolism, and art theory. Recent publications explore magic in art, alchemical transformations, and Surrealist engagements with global cultures. Current projects include co-curating an exhibition on wartime print resistance at the National Galleries of Scotland.
Education includes a PhD from the University of Sussex (2020), MA from the Courtauld (Distinction, 2015), and BA from Sussex (First Class, 2014). He received a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (2020-2023) supporting his monograph on Surrealist practices.
