Vivian Neal

Vivian Neal is a Lecturer (P.Eng.) in the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Their academic background includes a Master of Engineering in Technology (M.E.T.) from the University of British Columbia, and undergraduate degrees in Systems Design Engineering (B.A.Sc.) and Integrated Studies (B.I.S.) from the University of Waterloo. Neal’s teaching focuses on fostering students’ ethical reasoning, responsibility, and leadership in sustainability, emphasizing global citizenship and socially responsible engineering practices.

Neal’s research interests center on integrating sustainability into engineering curricula and pedagogical innovation. They have contributed to transformative educational programs, such as SFU’s Sustainable Energy Engineering program, and developed courses like SEE 101W (Process, Form and Convention in Professional Genres) and MSE 401W (Project Documentation and Group Dynamics). Their work also addresses engineering ethics, communication skills in technical fields, and experiential learning.

Neal has published extensively on topics including interdisciplinary assignments, accreditation standards for sustainable development, and microelectronics education. They edited the Experiential Learning Casebook (2014) and co-authored key texts on embedding sustainability into engineering education. Continuing studies include the New Farmers Business Bootcamp (2021), Ethnobotany courses (2019), and First Nations Ecological Systems Management (2013).
