Dr. Tom Beckley is a Professor at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management since 2000. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA). His expertise lies at the intersection of sociology and natural resource management, focusing on community sustainability, public participation, and energy-climate change dynamics. He teaches courses on social systems, ethics in resource management, and environmental communication.
Before UNB, he worked at Canada's Forest Service in Alberta and New Brunswick as a pioneering sociologist. His research emphasizes community resilience, energy literacy, and participatory approaches to environmental governance. Notable contributions include studies on forest sector public engagement and small-scale landowner behaviors.
Dr. Beckley co-edited Society and Natural Resources (2009-2011) and actively practices environmental stewardship through managing his 100-acre woodlot, maple syrup production, and permaculture.
