Suzanne Maman, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Associate Dean for Global Health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. She leads global health initiatives, integrates global strategies into research and education, and collaborates with institutions like the WHO and CDC. Her work focuses on HIV/AIDS, violence prevention, and women’s health, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Maman co-leads the MPH global health concentration and directs the UNC faculty role at the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center.
Education: PhD (2000), MHS (1995) in International Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; BS (1992) in Human Ecology from Cornell University.
Research Interests: Global health, HIV/AIDS prevention, violence against women, and gender equity. She pioneered interventions linking microfinance and health leadership to reduce HIV and intimate partner violence among young men in Tanzania. Her work influenced WHO clinical guidelines for women’s HIV testing.
Awards: 2017 Bernard G. Greenberg Alumni Endowment Award, 2012 Edward G. McGavran Teaching Award, and 2001 New Investigator Award from the Center for AIDS Research.
Global Partnerships: Collaborates with UNC’s Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases and the Water Institute, advancing programs in over 60 countries. Her research emphasizes community-driven solutions, resilience, and policy impact.
