Kathleen MacQueen

Kathleen MacQueen, PhD holds adjunct appointments in the UNC School of Medicine, Department of Social Medicine and the Gillings School of Global Public Health's Department of Health Behavior. She served as the UNC CFAR Developmental Core Director from 2015 to 2023 and has extensive experience in global health research, including roles at FHI 360 (2001–2023) and CDC (1991–2001). Her research focuses on the social and ethical aspects of biomedical HIV prevention trials, including vaccines, microbicides, and PrEP.

Research Interests: Dr. MacQueen specializes in community-based participatory research, global health, and HIV/AIDS prevention strategies. Her work emphasizes ethical frameworks for biomedical trials and improving adherence to HIV prevention technologies in marginalized communities. She has led projects such as LinCS 2 Durham (NIH R01) and a global TB drug trial evaluation framework (NIH R21).

Service & Grants: Member of the NIH Behavioral and Social Science Approaches to Preventing HIV/AIDS Study Section (BSPH). Funded projects include USAID research on vaginal ring adherence and NIH grants focused on Durham’s Black communities.
