Dr. Susan Pui San Lok is a Professor of Contemporary Art and Director of the Decolonising Arts Institute at University of the Arts London. She leads initiatives interrogating colonial legacies in art and cultural institutions. Her academic journey includes roles as Reader and Associate Professor at Middlesex University (2013–2018) and prior teaching at University of East London, Goldsmiths, and international institutions. Educated at University of Leeds (BA, 1994) and University of East London (PhD, 2004), her research bridges art practice and theory.
Key grants include the AHRC-funded 'Transforming Collections: Reimagining Art, Nation and Heritage' (2021–2024) and 'Decolonising Collections Curatorial Research Network' (2021). She co-led the 'Black Artists and Modernism' project (2015–2018) with Prof. Sonia Boyce. Teaching supervision includes work on feminist epistemologies with Black and Asian artists.
Her artistic practice spans moving image, installation, and performance, with exhibitions at Venice Biennale, Guangzhou Triennial, and Montreal's MAI. Publications focus on decolonial art histories, curatorial methodologies, and intersectional conceptualism.
