Associate Professor Sue Whatman serves as the Higher Degree Research Coordinator at Griffith University and is the immediate past President of ACHPER Incorporated. With over three decades of experience in teacher education, she currently leads Higher Degree Research in education and the Health and Physical Education Double Major at Griffith University. Additionally, she is a member of the Board of Graduate Research and an active research supervisor and examiner.
Her educational background includes a PhD from Queensland University of Technology (2004) on community participation in health education decision-making for girls in remote Indigenous communities, a Master of Education (1993) on health-related fitness curriculum in Queensland secondary schools, a Bachelor of Education with honours equivalent (1990), and a Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) from Brisbane College of Advanced Education (1989) with majors in health and physical education and geography.
Internationally renowned for her research in decolonising health and physical education curriculum and sport pedagogy, Sue's work is anchored in social justice, equity, and anti-racist praxis. Her research interests span critical Indigenous studies, initial teacher education, professional learning, and coaching.
Sue Whatman has been awarded the prestigious Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) in recognition of her contributions to higher education.
As a research supervisor, she has secured funding from Australian Government, university, and commercial sources, with a focus on critical Indigenous studies, health and physical education, and sport pedagogy. Her work emphasizes practical applications for teacher education and professional development.
