Stephen Tam

Stephen Tam is a Lecturer in Flute at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, Western University, and also serves as a flute faculty member at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. He is a celebrated Canadian flautist specializing in solo, chamber, and orchestral performance across baroque to contemporary repertoire.

Education:

• Master of Music in Orchestral Performance and Professional Studies Certificate from Manhattan School of Music
• Bachelor of Music in Performance with Honours from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music

Stephen Tam is renowned for his dynamic performances with orchestras and ensembles such as the Canadian Sinfonietta, Ontario Philharmonic, Array Ensemble, and Contact Contemporary Music. He has recorded digital EPs featuring Canadian composer Robert Lemay’s works and been broadcast on CBC Radio and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).

Performances & Collaborations:

• Solo concerto engagements with Canadian Sinfonietta, Ontario Philharmonic, Calgary Philharmonic, and others
• Chamber performances at The White House, Hong Kong Government House, Toronto Summer Music Festival, and Ottawa Chamberfest
• Principal flute roles with Canadian Sinfonietta, Ontario Pops Orchestra, Toronto Mozart Players, and guest appearances with Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, London Symphonia, and others

Honors:

• First-Prize Winner, 32nd CBC/Radio-Canada National Competition for Young Performers

As an educator, Tam maintains a private studio in Thornhill, Ontario, and serves on the faculty of the Interprovincial Music Camp (IMC) in summer. He is also a frequent adjudicator at national, provincial, and local competitions.
