Professor Stephen Harrison is a Professor of Latin Literature and Senior Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford. His academic journey includes roles as a tutor (1987–2020), post-doctoral fellow at St John’s College, and junior lecturer at Magdalen College. He has held visiting positions globally, including at Princeton IAS, Stanford, and the University of Stellenbosch. His research focuses on Latin literature’s reception, especially Augustan poetry (Vergil, Horace), Roman novels (Apuleius), and neo-Latin works like George Buchanan’s poetry.
His recent publications include The Neo-Latin Verse of Urban VIII (2024), co-authored works on Apuleius and classical connections in First World War poetry, and edited volumes on Latin poetry style and neo-Latin anthologies. He collaborates internationally on projects like an anthology of neo-Latin literature by women and a study on Seamus Heaney’s Aeneid translation.
Teaching interests include supervising doctoral students in neo-Latin and classical reception studies. His career reflects extensive global academic engagement with over 30 years at Oxford.
