Jeffrey Ulrich

Jeffrey Ulrich is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (New Brunswick), with an affiliation to the Institute for Advanced Study’s School of Historical Studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on Roman literature, ancient philosophy, and temporal representation in classical texts, with notable work on Apuleius’ Metamorphoses, Horace’s Epodes, and Petronius’ Satyricon. His interdisciplinary approach bridges classical philology, gender studies, and narrative theory.

Ulrich’s academic contributions include a 2024 edited volume on temporality in Greek and Roman literature (Making Time for Greek and Roman Literature) and influential articles on Apuleius’ use of Platonic myth and the intertextual dimensions of Vergil’s Aeneid. His teaching spans advanced Latin epic (Vergil), Roman satire (Juvenal), and ancient religion. He has contributed to special issues such as Vergil and the Feminine (2021), re-evaluating gender’s role in Augustan literature.

Ulrich’s research highlights the intersection of time, power, and narrative structure in classical works, with particular attention to marginalized voices and the philosophical underpinnings of ancient fiction.
