About
Stephan Dusil is Professor of Private Law, Germanic Legal History, Contemporary Legal History and Canon Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Tübingen since 2019. Previously, he served as Associate Professor at KU Leuven Faculty of Law (2014-2019) and Visiting Professor at Université Catholique de Louvain (2017-2019). His academic journey includes a Habilitation at University of Zürich (2016), a PhD from Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main (2005), and a Licence in Mediaeval Studies from Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Toronto (2010).
Dusil's research spans medieval canon law, legal history, private law, and the historical development of European legal systems. His work particularly focuses on the transmission of legal knowledge between late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, the evolution of canon law between 1000 and 1215, and comparative studies of urban legal systems across Europe. He has made significant contributions to understanding the dissemination of town law in the late Middle Ages, the historical development of marriage and family law, and the relationship between church and state in European legal history.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on textual analysis of medieval canon law collections, particularly Gratian's Decretum, while also examining 19th and 20th century legal developments in Germany and Belgium. Dusil's scholarly approach combines meticulous manuscript analysis with broader historiographical questions about legal evolution and knowledge transmission across historical periods.
Dusil has authored several influential monographs including 'Wissensordnungen des Rechts im Wandel. Päpstlicher Jurisdiktionsprimat und Zölibat zwischen 1000 und 1215' (2018), 'Eduard Meijers en het Ligurische erfrecht in Europa' (2018), and 'Die Soester Stadtrechtsfamilie' (2007), which demonstrate his expertise in both medieval legal history and modern legal historiography. He has also co-edited significant volumes such as 'Creating and Sharing Legal Knowledge in the Twelfth Century' (2023) and 'Proceedings of the Fourteenth International Congress of Medieval Canon Law' (2016).
