Stefan Backius is a Senior Lecturer in History at Karlstad University, Sweden. His research focuses on deindustrialization, industrial heritage, and community memory in post-industrial regions, particularly Bergslagen. He leads projects like Changing Places of Work (FORMAS/FORTE, 2021-2024) and Storfors Mill Town Study (Wettergren Foundation, 2024). He chairs Värmland Business History Association and sits on Arkivcentrum Örebro län's board.
His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate history courses. Research interests include how communities adapt to industrial decline through cultural activism, public memory, and identity重构. Recent work examines green re-industrialization and fossil-free transitions in former industrial towns.
Notable projects include analyzing Hällefors Bruk's archival legacy and studying gender dynamics in 1980s industrial towns. He actively bridges academic research with local heritage preservation efforts, emphasizing participatory methods and grassroots histories.
