Annika Rudman is a Professor of Gender Studies Research at Karlstad University. She holds additional roles as an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Stellenbosch (Faculty of Law, Department of Public Law), a Visiting Professor at the SEARCWL-UZ in Zimbabwe, and serves on editorial boards of journals such as State Practice and International Law and International Human Rights Law Review. Her research focuses on gender, law, post-colonial perspectives, and African feminism, with emphasis on sexual/gender-based violence, property rights, medical law, and transgender rights. She has conducted fieldwork across Africa, including South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Malawi.
Education: LL.B. (Lund University, 1997), M.A. in International Human Rights Law (Lund University, 2001), Ph.D. in Peace and Development Research (University of Gothenburg, 2010). Academic promotions include Associate Professor of International Law (2011) and Full Professor of International Law (2016) at the University of Stellenbosch.
Teaching emphasizes human rights, legal theory, and active learning methodologies. Key courses include international law, African human rights frameworks, legal interpretation, and feminist jurisprudence.
Collaborations include partnerships with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, the University of Pretoria’s Centre for Human Rights, and NGOs across Africa. Her edited volumes and special journal editions address transformative equality, electoral democracy, and the Maputo Protocol’s implementation.
Her publications critically examine regional human rights systems, focusing on ECOWAS and African Court jurisprudence regarding gender-based violence, LGBTQ+ rights, and legal accountability. Recent work highlights intersections of law, gender, and post-colonial contexts.
