Sophie Knowles

Sophie Knowles is Associate Professor in Professional Writing at Middlesex University, where she leads the MSc Digital Journalism program. Her research examines how media represent economic systems and inequality, with particular focus on gender dynamics in financial journalism.

Her influential book Mediating Financial Crisis analyzes journalistic practices during economic turmoil. Current projects investigate gendered production of economic news, media representations of inequality, and public understanding of financial institutions through news consumption.

Dr. Knowles supervises doctoral candidates including Maryam Jabeen and Adeyeye Joseph. She developed the Journalism Conversation Series to bridge theory and practice through experiential learning. Her professional background includes newspaper writing and editing for a global corporate magazine.

She earned her PhD from Murdoch University in Australia, building on her journalism experience. Her teaching integrates critical media analysis with practical journalism skills development.
