Sigurd Johnson is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral Activities and Percussion Studies at the Challey School of Music, North Dakota State University (NDSU). He oversees athletic bands, orchestras, and percussion studies. His professional roles include Director of the NDSU Gold Star Marching Band (2008–2021) and leadership positions at Valley City State University, Rust College, and the University of Memphis Marching Band.
Dr. Johnson holds a D.M.A. from the University of Memphis, an M.M. from Northwestern University, and a B.A. from Concordia College. His career spans performances with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, jazz/theater freelancing, and teaching in Norway. He currently serves on the International Music Camp (IMC) board as Past President of the IMC US Corporation.
Active in music associations, he has held leadership roles in the North Dakota Music Education Association, North Dakota National Band Association, and Percussive Arts Society. As a clinician and adjudicator, he specializes in percussion, jazz ensembles, and marching/concert bands. He is endorsed by Yamaha, Sabian, Evans, Vic Firth, and the Black Swamp Percussion Education Team.
