Shane Theunissen

Shane Theunissen is an Associate Professor in Child and Youth Study at Mount Saint Vincent University, holding a Ph.D. in International Development Studies from Saint Mary's University.

His research focuses on Indigenous education, experiential learning, and community development, emphasizing epistemological diversity and decolonizing methodologies. Theunissen explores how educational systems can validate knowledge from marginalized communities.

His pedagogical innovations include developing reflective assessment strategies and outdoor cultural studies programs, informed by six years teaching in an isolated First Nations community where he created an Environmental Education curriculum.

Theunissen serves as Director of the 'People of the Sea' Maritime Heritage Photo Contest, documenting Nova Scotia's coastal cultural heritage through community engagement.
