Shama Rangwala is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities at York University's Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, and serves as General Education Coordinator. She holds a PhD from the University of Alberta, an MA and BA (Honours) from McGill University.
Research Interests: Her work focuses on adaptations of liberalism and fascism in cultural production, free speech, and academic freedom frameworks. Key areas include Culture and Cultural Studies, Race and Racism, Literary Studies, American Studies, Film Studies, and Modernism.
Projects & Engagement: As Principal Investigator of the Pedagogy and Praxis project, she organized the Progressive Publics: Connecting Scholarship and Media symposia series across Canada. She co-hosts the podcast Replay with journalist Desmond Cole and has contributed to outlets like Public, Canadian Review of American Studies, Jacobin, The Globe and Mail, and others. She served on the editorial boards of Imaginations: Journal of Cross-Cultural Image Studies (2019–2023) and Briarpatch Magazine (2023–2024).
Teaching: Specializes in literary and critical theory, film/media studies, 19th–20th century literature, and political/social theory, emphasizing practical application of education beyond classrooms. Accepting new graduate students.
