Dr. Scott Nicholas Furlan is an Assistant Professor in the Translational Science and Therapeutics Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, with a secondary appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is a member of the Immunotherapy Integrated Research Center (IIRC) and Translational Data Science Integrated Research Center (TDS IRC) at Fred Hutch. His clinical expertise includes hematopoietic cell transplantation, pediatric oncology, and acute myelogenous leukemia.
Education:
- Post-doctoral Fellowship in Transplant Immunology, Seattle Children’s Research Institute (2012-2015)
- Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology Oncology, UT Southwestern Medical Center (2009-2012)
- Residency in Pediatrics, UT Southwestern Medical Center (2006-2009)
- MD, Keck School of Medicine at USC (2002-2006)
- Bachelor of Arts, Macalester College (1994-1998)
Research Focus: Dr. Furlan employs single-cell genomics to study immune reconstitution after hematopoietic cell transplantation and cellular immunotherapies for pediatric cancers. His lab investigates graft-versus-host disease mechanisms, T-cell dysfunction, leukemia biology, and tumor microenvironments, with emphasis on translational applications for improving clinical outcomes.
Publication Trends: Recent work (2023-2025) focuses on immunogenomics of transplantation, cellular therapies, and tumor biology. Key themes include T-cell exhaustion, microbiota-immune interactions, epigenetic profiling, and novel immunotherapy targets. Studies frequently integrate computational biology with translational models.
Clinical & Lab Leadership: Dr. Furlan leads the Furlan Lab at Fred Hutch, which develops computational tools for single-cell analysis and conducts research in pediatric malignancies. He oversees clinical trials investigating tumor heterogeneity in leukemia and Ewing sarcoma.
