Sarah Gates

Dr. Sarah Gates is a Professor in the English Department at St. Lawrence University, specializing in Victorian literature and culture while extending her expertise to modern fantasy (notably J.R.R. Tolkien), Shakespearean studies, Louise Erdrich’s novels, and the analysis of singer-songwriters over the past four decades. She teaches courses such as "The Victorian Novel," "Survey of British Literature," "Methods of Critical Analysis," and "J.R.R. Tolkien," integrating interdisciplinary approaches.

Her scholarly work appears in prestigious journals like PMLA, ELH, and Dickens Studies Annual, alongside poetry and songs published in literary magazines. At the 2019 "World of Bob Dylan" conference in Tulsa, she presented an analysis of Dylan’s "The Gates of Eden," incorporating live musical performance, which led to a collaboration with videographer Godfrey Jordan for a music video.
