Sandy Butler is Professor and Interim Director of the School of Social Work at the University of Maine, specializing in social welfare policy and low-income populations. Her research examines health needs and social service experiences of vulnerable groups across the lifespan.
Research focuses on:
- Poverty and public assistance systems
- Aging and long-term care workforce
- Educational access for low-income mothers
- Policy impacts on marginalized communities
As Hartford Geriatric Scholar and Faculty Research Mentor, she expanded aging-related research and community service initiatives. Current projects investigate home care worker retention and state policy impacts on low-income Mainers.
Dr. Butler collaborates with Maine Equal Justice Partners and contributes to policy discourse through the Scholars Strategy Network and Bangor Daily News columns. She serves on boards including Maine Center for Economic Policy and Maine Women's Lobby.
