Ryan Schultz

Ryan Schultz serves as an Affiliate Artist in Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Puget Sound School of Music, while maintaining active teaching positions at Seattle Pacific University, Lakeside School, and Midsummer Musical Retreat. He is Principal Tubist of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra and Auburn Symphony Orchestra, with previous tenure as Principal Tubist of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra (2000-2015).

His educational background includes:

• Master of Music in Music Performance/Pedagogy from Central Washington University
• Postgraduate study at the University of Washington
• Musical training at Lawrence Conservatory, U.S. Navy School of Music, and Aspen and Tanglewood Music Festivals

Schultz has developed significant expertise in low brass pedagogy, creating comprehensive teaching materials and resources widely used throughout the Pacific Northwest. His teaching philosophy emphasizes fundamental practice routines, effective audition preparation, and holistic musical development, reflected in his lecture "Auditions: Preparation, Planning and Execution" presented at Puget Sound's BRASSworks event.

Schultz has been recognized as a "Very Important Person" in music education by Conn-Selmer for his work as Director of Educational Outreach and Partnerships at Music Center of the Northwest (2015-2019).

As a mentor, Schultz has guided numerous award-winning students who have achieved top honors in international, national, and regional competitions. His students have gone on to study at prestigious institutions including the Colburn Conservatory of Music on full scholarships.

Schultz founded the "Greater Seattle TUBACHRISTMAS" event and has served on the Board of the Lake Union Civic Orchestra. During the Covid Pandemic, he contributed to community service through Catholic Housing Services of Western Washington, demonstrating his commitment to music education access for all.
