Ryan Bramley

Dr Ryan Bramley is a Lecturer in Education at the School of Education, University of Sheffield. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and serves as Academic Lead for Student Support and Widening Participation Coordinator. His interdisciplinary work bridges education, documentary filmmaking, and arts-based research.

Bramley’s research focuses on media representation of minoritised groups, arts-based methodologies, and collaborative documentary filmmaking. His projects include the £80,000-funded ‘My Media, My Power, My World’ and the Sheffield Innovation Programme (SIP) project ‘Rethinking Deafness, Film and Accessibility’. He also led the UKRI-funded ‘Evaluating Trespass Prevention’ project with Network Rail and the National Railway Museum.

His recent publications span topics such as interdisciplinary teaching in schools, railway safety, Windrush legacy, and research ethics. These works emphasize participatory methods, ethical research practices, and cross-cultural representation.

Bramley contributes to doctoral education through the innovative ‘PhD-by-Practice’ program, allowing creative submissions like film or poetry. He supervises PhD/EdD students in Digital Media Consumption, Contemporary Film, Working-Class Voices, and participatory research. He is involved in the Participatory Research Network at the University of Sheffield and advocates for inclusivity in research ethics.
