Ryan Abendroth

Ryan Abendroth is a Senior Lecturer at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses focusing on climate, energy, BIM, and passive house design. Previously, he taught at Rhode Island School of Design and served as a passive house consultant for Kansas University’s Studio 804. As a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC®), he has led over 200 passive house projects across residential, commercial, and nonprofit sectors. He co-founded Passive Energy Designs LLC, a St. Louis-based consultancy for low-energy building standards.

His research emphasizes high-performance building systems, with a decade of leadership in passive house innovation. Notable projects include Team Illinois’ Solar Decathlon 2009 (2nd place) and the 2017 Crete House. He serves on PHIUS Technical Committee and trains CPHC professionals.

Key presentations include PhiusCon 2023 on passive building strategies in Texas and 2022 Chicago conference on climate-specific case studies.
