Professor Robert Wintemute is a Professor of Human Rights Law at King's College London's Dickson Poon School of Law, specializing in anti-discrimination law, sexual orientation law, and EU law. He joined the institution in 1991 after practicing as an Associate in New York's Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP. His education includes a BA in Economics (University of Alberta), LLB and BCL degrees (McGill University), and a DPhil from the University of Oxford.
Wintemute's research focuses on advancing LGBTQ+ rights through strategic litigation at the European Court of Human Rights, including landmark cases like Karner v. Austria and Oliari v. Italy. He has contributed to legal frameworks for same-sex partnerships, adoption rights, and combating religious exemptions to anti-discrimination laws. His work intersects with global human rights advocacy, addressing issues such as racial discrimination in Israel-Palestine and India's Section 377.
Notable publications include analyses of EU anti-discrimination law, marriage equality jurisprudence, and the legal challenges posed by conflicts between religious beliefs and LGBTQ+ rights. Wintemute has advised governments and litigants on cases spanning 47 Council of Europe member states, emphasizing incremental legal reforms to achieve equality.
Recent projects include evaluating the post-Brexit UK's adherence to anti-discrimination standards and exploring the applicability of European Convention on Human Rights principles to geopolitical conflicts. His contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals on reduced inequalities and justice systems.
