About
Professor Ray David William is a leading academic in endocrinology and circadian biology, currently holding the position of Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Oxford. Previously, he served as Professor of Medicine at the University of Manchester (2005–2020), with earlier roles including Senior Lecturer and GSK Fellow. His research focuses on glucocorticoid receptor signaling, circadian rhythms, and their impact on inflammation, immunity, and metabolic disorders. Key contributions include identifying genetic loci linked to sleep disorders and chronotype, as well as discovering mechanisms underlying glucocorticoid resistance in cancer.
Education:
- MB ChB (1987), University of Manchester
- PhD (1994), University of Manchester
Research Interests: Professor Ray’s work integrates endocrinology with circadian biology, investigating how circadian clocks regulate immune function and metabolic pathways. His studies highlight the role of nuclear receptors in mediating these processes, with a focus on translational applications such as personalized asthma management through chronotherapy.
Leadership & Awards:
- 2017 Wellcome Trust Investigator Award
- 2014 Clinical Endocrinology Trust Medal
- Chair of Bioscientifica Trust (2016–2024)
- Senior Editor, Journal of Endocrinology and Journal of Molecular Endocrinology
Grants & Collaborations: His research has been supported by grants from MRC, Wellcome Trust, and NIHR. Collaborations include work with the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre and initiatives in drug discovery targeting glucocorticoid receptor isoforms and circadian regulators.
