About
Pavol Macho is an Associate Professor and Studio Manager in the Department of Applied Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Specializing in glass art since 2011, he explores the fundamental properties of glass with a focus on transparency and light as core artistic elements. His work bridges traditional glass techniques with contemporary artistic expression.
His educational foundation includes:
- 1980-1983: School of Glassmaking, Nový Bor, Czech Republic
- 1983-1986: School of Applied Arts for Glassmaking, Kamenický Šenov, Czech Republic
- 1989-1995: Department of Glass Art at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava
- 1993: Student exchange at École des Beaux-Arts, St. Etienne, France
Macho's artistic philosophy centers on what he describes as 'pushing the boundaries of glass' through painting and drawing techniques that maintain artistic authenticity. He deliberately avoids decorative effects, preferring 'apparent boredom' to highlight glass's essential qualities. His work creates what he calls 'windows' rather than traditional paintings, exploring the interplay between real and illusory space. He collaborates extensively with photographers, painters, and sculptors, integrating diverse artistic disciplines with glass techniques.
His recent exhibition series demonstrates a consistent evolution from 'Conjunctions/Time Match' to 'Invisible Skin' and 'Wind,' showcasing mastery of glass painting where transparency and light remain central themes. These works reflect his belief that 'painting and drawing on glass have enormous potential' as artistic expressions.
Macho's recognition includes the Crystal Wing award (2017) and Tatrabanka Foundation nomination (2015). His work resides in prestigious collections worldwide:
- Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum, Bratislava
- The Finnish Glass Museum, Riihimäki
- Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, Denmark
- European Museum of Modern Glass, Coburg
- Museum of Modern Glass Art, Copenhagen
As an educator, Macho teaches courses including 'Glass preparatory course' and 'Chapters from the history of Slovak and Czech glass of the 20th century.' He actively mentors students, planning exhibitions to showcase emerging glass artists. His collaborative projects with Jana Hojstričová, Jozef Jankovič, and Svätopluk Mikyta demonstrate his commitment to artistic dialogue across disciplines.
Macho's studio practice involves meticulous glass painting techniques where final results only emerge after multiple firings. His work with Mikyta exemplifies this philosophy, deliberately preserving the natural structure after melting rather than polishing for 'aquarium effects' he considers overly decorative. This approach reflects his deeper understanding that 'everything can only be seen after melting, after firing'—a testament to his mastery of the medium.
