About
Paul Steward is a Lecturer in Native American Studies at Sonoma State University since 2016 and also teaches American Indian Studies courses at San Francisco State University. As a member of the Elem Indian Colony of Pomo people, he brings firsthand cultural knowledge to his academic work while maintaining an active music career.
His research interests focus on the intersection of Pomo cultural traditions and contemporary artistic expression. Steward specializes in preserving and innovating traditional Pomo music while exploring its connections to blues and other American musical forms. He has worked closely with tribal elders to ensure authentic representation of Pomo traditions in his creative work.
Steward's academic work emphasizes cultural transmission through music and performance. His recent solo album World Champion represents a significant contribution to the field by blending traditional Pomo chants with contemporary musical arrangements, receiving approval from tribal leaders and community members.
As an educator, Steward mentors students in understanding Indigenous perspectives while actively participating in the Pomo musical community. He collaborates with other Pomo artists including his cousins Matonth Brown (Rollin' Fox), Btaka Brown, and Stewie G, forming part of a vibrant network of contemporary Indigenous musicians.
