Nora M. Alter

Nora M. Alter is a Professor in the Department of Film and Media Arts at Temple University Rome. She previously served as Chair of Film and Media Arts and founded Temple’s Venice Study Away program. Prior to joining Temple, she was a Research Professor in the Departments of English and German and Affiliate faculty in Jewish Studies and Women and Gender Studies at the University of Florida, Gainesville. She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Pennsylvania and is fluent in English, French, and German.

Her research focuses on comparative media studies, the essay film, sound studies, and contemporary art. She has published extensively on artists like Chris Marker, Harun Farocki, and Stan Douglas, exploring intersections between film, installation art, and cultural theory. Her recent work includes a monograph on Harun Farocki and studies on acoustic dimensions in media.
