Dr Neil Greening is an Associate Professor at the University of Leicester and an Honorary Consultant Respiratory Physician at Glenfield Hospital. His research focuses on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), particularly exacerbations' systemic effects on physical function and muscle wasting. He leads clinical trials for novel therapies to mitigate exacerbations and chairs the BTS COPD Specialist Advisory Group. He is also part of the ERS CICERO consortium studying severe COPD exacerbations.
Dr Greening trained in Medicine at Newcastle University (2004), completed respiratory specialization and a PhD in Leicester, and was appointed as Associate Professor via a NIHR Fellowship in 2017. Clinically, he oversees complex COPD services, pulmonary rehabilitation, and lung volume reduction programs.
His research spans COPD exacerbations, post-COVID-19 rehabilitation, and respiratory viral infections. Key contributions include the PHOSP-COVID study on long-term outcomes and the UNIVERSAL study on respiratory virus pathogenesis. He directs the Centre for Sarcopenia and Muscle Research and co-leads the NIHR Leicester Clinical Research Facility.
