Michael Wimberly is a Professor at Bennington College, where he has taught since Fall 2012. As a drummer, percussionist, and composer, his work spans soul, funk, jazz, and global rhythms, with a focus on African diaspora music and improvisation. He offers courses on Sun Ra, Bill Dixon, Milford Graves, funk as rhythmic counterpoint, and composing for dance.

Wimberly’s research integrates music, performance, and social consciousness, emphasizing the role of rhythm in cultural identity and artistic innovation. His courses blend technical instruction with philosophical exploration, including collaborations with dance and visual arts disciplines.
He was honored with two Audelco nominations for his sound design work in theater productions such as Saint Lucy’s Eyes and Iced Out, Shackled and Chained. Wimberly also authored instructional materials on djembe and cajon percussion and released the album Afrofuturism, distributed by Warner Music Group.
