Michael Wenzel

Michael Wenzel is Professor at the University of Bonn's Department of Epileptology and Principal Investigator at the Institute for Experimental Epileptology and Cognition Research. As a Hertie Network of Excellence scholar, he leads translational neuroscience research bridging clinical epileptology and systems neurobiology.

His lab investigates fundamental mechanisms of seizure formation and propagation using cellular-resolution in vivo two-photon imaging, field electrophysiology, and nanopipette technology in chronic epilepsy models. Research combines murine and human studies to identify shared circuit elements in epileptic networks. Collaborative work spans medicinal chemistry (photopharmacology) and biomedical engineering (implantable neurodevices).

Publications demonstrate expertise in seizure microprogression mapping, neural ensemble dynamics, and advanced neuroimaging methodologies. Recent work emphasizes multi-scale recording techniques, anesthesia effects on synaptic architecture, and minimally invasive electrophysiology.
