Prior to academia, he spent 20 years as a portfolio manager and institutional pension fund advisor at Wells Fargo and Kemper Financial, managing over $1.25 billion in assets. Currently, he serves as managing partner of the Capital Law Group, specializing in nonprofit law, campaign finance law, corporate finance, and government affairs. He is Vice Chair of the North Carolina Railroad Company, the state's oldest private business corporation (chartered in 1849).
