About
PD Dr. Michael Walter is a Principal Investigator at the University of Freiburg's Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Institute of Physics. He leads the Core Facility 3 for Modelling and Simulation of Material Systems within the Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies (FIT). His research focuses on computational catalysis, density functional theory, functional nanosystems, surface interactions, and theoretical spectroscopy. Key projects include the TriboGen-Chem initiative studying triboelectric materials and lipid surface properties.
His doctoral student, Pooja Bhat Mulki, is under his primary supervision. Notable publications include studies on C(1s) binding energy shifts in carbon materials (2025), mechanochemical activation of anthracene (2023), and mechanochromic torsional springs (2021). Walter collaborates with institutions like the Fraunhofer Institute and contributes to the Agnes Pockels Doctoral Fellowship Program. His work bridges computational modeling with experimental materials science, emphasizing energy storage, solar conversion, and tribological systems.
