Professor Michael Schmidt OBE FRSL is a distinguished poet, literary historian, translator, and editor affiliated with the Centre for New Writing at The University of Manchester. His academic career includes teaching positions at Manchester and Glasgow Universities, and a two-year residency at St John’s College, Cambridge.
- Education: Harvard University and University of Oxford
His research focuses on literary history, poetry, and novelistic forms, with major works including Lives of the Poets, Lives of the Ancient Poets, and The Novel: a biography. He co-directs the Modern Literary Archives Project at the John Rylands Library and leads Carcanet Press and PN Review as Editorial and Managing Director/General Editor.
His awards include the OBE and FRSL recognition. He is actively involved in literary publishing and archival preservation.
