Michael S. Malley

Michael S. Malley is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), where he has been teaching since 2004. His expertise focuses on Southeast Asia, Indo-Pacific security, and maritime security, with additional specializations in comparative politics and international relations. He serves as Academic Associate for Curriculum 241 and leads research initiatives related to China’s geopolitical influence in the region.

Dr. Malley teaches courses on Southeast Asian government and security, regional international relations, and historical/cultural contexts. His research analyzes how U.S. allies and partners respond to China’s economic, diplomatic, and military activities, particularly in maritime domains. He has collaborated with institutions such as Ohio University’s Contemporary History Institute and directed WMD counter-proliferation projects.
