Michael Roden

Professor Michael Roden is a full professor at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, serving as Director of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology at the University Hospital Düsseldorf. He is also a member of the board of the German Diabetes Center (DDZ, Leibniz Center for Diabetes Research) and the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD eV). His roles include leadership in diabetes research and policy, including chairing the Medical Committee of the German Council of Science and Humanities.

• Education: Habilitation at University of Vienna (thesis on hepatic insulin sensitivity), Max Kade Fellow at Yale University, USA.
• Prior roles: Head of Hanusch Hospital (Vienna) and Karl Landsteiner Institute for Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases (2004–2008).

Research focuses on energy metabolism in diabetes and obesity, particularly mitochondrial function in muscle and liver. His group pioneered non-invasive metabolic measurements using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Recent work highlights mitochondrial dysfunction's role in diabetes complications like NAFLD.

• Award: 2018 Morgagni Gold Medal (Europe's top metabolic research honor).

Contributes to the German Diabetes Study, aiming to improve patient outcomes through understanding diabetes progression. Active in both clinical and translational research, bridging basic science to clinical applications.
