Michael Birzer

Dr. Michael Birzer is a Professor and Graduate Coordinator in the School of Criminal Justice at Wichita State University. He also serves as Director of the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Hub, a unit within the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College. Prior to academia, he had a career in law enforcement, retiring as a lieutenant. His research focuses on police policy, behavior, and operations, particularly the intersection of race and policing. He has authored numerous publications on topics ranging from police culture to criminal justice equity.

Dr. Birzer’s academic interests include advancing community policing strategies, exploring racial disparities in law enforcement, and improving police training methodologies.
