Maxwell Briggs

Maxwell Briggs is a Teaching Professor in Music at Lake Forest College, specializing in Tuba and Low Brass. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Illinois Wesleyan University, a Master of Music, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Northwestern University. As a freelance tubist in Chicago, he focuses on performance, chamber music, and expanding classical music audiences through innovative collaborations. During the pandemic, he transitioned to online teaching, mentoring students across multiple institutions including Lake Forest College, the Music Institute of Chicago, and area high schools.

His professional achievements include winning major tuba competitions in 2015. He co-founded the Temperance Brass Quintet, which blends classical and contemporary genres in unconventional venues. Briggs is also an active clinician, recitalist, and advocate for accessible music education.

Advising and mentorship form a core part of his work, with a studio of tuba and euphonium students. His contributions to music education and performance reflect a commitment to both tradition and innovation.
