Max Warrack is a Lecturer in International Relations and East Asian Studies at the University of Warwick, serving as Course Director for the International Politics and East Asia MA. He coordinates the MA Student Experience and Progression (MA CSEP) and chairs the East Asia Study Group (EASG). His research focuses on the intersection of culture and politics, particularly analyzing Japanese security policy through manga. He holds a PhD in Politics and International Studies from Warwick (2023), an MA in Japanese Studies from the University of Sheffield (2012), and an MA in History from the University of Edinburgh (2011).
Research Interests: Popular culture and world politics, security studies, critical military studies, and Japanese security policy. His work explores how media-entertainment shapes political ideas, exemplified by analyzing gendered representations of the Japan Self-Defense Force (JSDF) in manga. Recent work argues Japan’s post-Cold War security trajectory reflects a cultural shift toward militarism.
Awards: Recipient of the Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence (2021), Fellow of Advance HE, and multiple scholarships including the Sasakawa Postgraduate Studentship.
Teaching: Convenes undergraduate and MA modules on Asia-Pacific relations, East Asian development policies, and regional perspectives. Holds weekly advice hours via in-person or Microsoft Teams.
Admin Roles: Coordinates MA student progressions and oversees the EASG, a research-focused study group.
