Matthew Paterson is Professor of International Politics at the University of Manchester's School of Social Sciences. His research examines climate change politics, environmental political economy, and global governance, exploring how environmental challenges transform political institutions and economic systems. He directs the Centre for Joined-Up Sustainability Transformations (JUST).
Research interests include:
- Climate governance and policy stability
- Political economy of decarbonization
- Cultural dimensions of climate change
- Social network analysis in climate governance
His publications include the award-winning books Automobile Politics: Ecology and Cultural Political Economy (winner of the British International Studies Association's IPE Group Prize) and Climate Capitalism. He served as Lead Author for the IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report chapter on international cooperation. His current projects examine green energy transitions and climate governance during economic crises, with recent work analyzing central banking's role in climate policy.
