Mathieu Duchâtel

Mathieu Duchâtel serves as Resident Senior Fellow and Director of the Asia Program at Institut Montaigne, a prominent French policy think tank. He joined Institut Montaigne in January 2019, bringing extensive experience from previous positions at leading international research institutions including the European Council on Foreign Relations, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, and Asia Centre.

Dr. Duchâtel specializes in Asian studies with particular focus on China, security policy, and economic security. His research spans Chinese foreign policy, technology geopolitics, Indo-Pacific strategy, and EU-Asia relations. He has developed expertise in analyzing China's military strategy, economic security policies, and technological competition, with numerous publications examining semiconductor supply chains, 5G infrastructure, and China's maritime strategy.

His work demonstrates consistent focus on the intersection of technology, security, and international relations, with increasing attention to economic security frameworks and EU strategic autonomy. Recent publications reveal growing emphasis on EU's role in techno-nationalism and Sino-American rivalry, particularly regarding semiconductor supply chains, critical infrastructure security, and the geopolitical implications of technology transfers.

Throughout his career, Duchâtel has maintained deep engagement with Asian academic and policy communities, having spent nine years conducting research in Shanghai, Taipei, and Beijing. His methodology combines policy analysis with field research, evidenced by his visiting scholar positions at Peking University, Japan Institute of International Affairs, and Taiwan's Institute of National Defense and Security Research.
