Jean-Pierre CABESTAN holds the position of Visiting Professor at the European Interdisciplinary Studies Department of the College of Europe’s Natolin Campus. He is also Senior Researcher Emeritus at France’s CNRS (attached to IFRAE), Professor Emeritus at Hong Kong Baptist University, and holds affiliations with institutions including Asia Centre (Paris) and the German Marshall Fund (Washington DC). His research focuses on Chinese political systems, Sino-African relations, cross-Strait dynamics, and international security.
Previously, he served as Chair Professor and Department Head (2007–2018) at Hong Kong Baptist University, Director of CEFC Hong Kong (1998–2003), and Taipei Office Director of CEFC (1994–1998). He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
His research explores authoritarian resilience in China, foreign policy strategies, and regional security. Notable works include analyses of China’s political evolution, Taiwan’s governance challenges, and Sino-African economic ties. His 2023 book Facing China: The Prospect for War and Peace examines geopolitical tensions in Asia-Pacific.
Awarded the Guizot Prize (2019) and Albert Thibaudet Prize (2023), his work appears in journals and edited volumes addressing China’s legal reforms, security policies, and cross-Strait relations. He has advised governments and international organizations on Asia-Pacific dynamics.
