Martin Conway is a Professor of Contemporary European History at the University of Oxford and a Fellow and Tutor in History at Balliol College. His research focuses on 20th-century Europe, with a specialization in Belgian history and broader themes such as citizenship and democratic institutions. He authored Western Europe’s Democratic Age, 1945-1968 (2020) and is currently working on Political Men, a study of male citizenship in Europe.
He has held leadership roles, including Chair of the Board of the Faculty of History (2015–2018, 2024–2027) and membership in the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Advisory Board. His funding includes grants from the Leverhulme Trust, AHRC, DFG, and CNRS.
Conway is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium’s francophone section. His editorial roles include former editorship of the English Historical Review.
